Reflexology 5N5371 (QQI Level 5)

Certificate Component (5N5371) 15 Credit awarded by QQI at Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications.

Purpose

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide reflexology treatments for the purposes of relaxation and the relief of stress in order to encourage general health and wellbeing, under appropriate supervision.

Who should attend this course?

The programme is a QQI / FETAC accredited course for learners who wish to learn both the practical and theoretical skills of Reflexology at Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). This module is not for learners who wish to train as a professional reflexologist but will provide a good basis for those wishing to do further studies to qualify as professional reflexologists.

Progression

On successful completion of the course the learner will be awarded the Level 5 component certificate in Reflexology by QQI / FETAC.

The component certificate may be used towards the Level 5 QQI / FETAC major awards including: Community Health Services or can be used to gain entry to Level 6 courses on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) in Higher and Further Education.

The qualification can also be used as entry to the professional Reflexology Diploma offered by A.U.R. A. which is a Level 5 course on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).

General Aims

1. Develop an understanding of the theoretical aspects of Reflexology.
2. Develop the necessary skills of Reflexology at introductory level.
3. Understand the theory and context of Reflexology in healthcare and complementary therapies.
4. Give the learner the theory and skills so they have the competence and ability for further study and training in order to become a professional reflexologist.

Course Content / Specific learning outcomes

  1. History and current concepts of reflex zones and their functions for the feet and hands
  2. Holistic Approach to clients and treatments
  3. Integral biology
  4. Professionalism during consultation and treatment
  5. Contraindications to reflexology
  6. Conditions or disorders of the feet and hands
  7. Possible reactions to reflexology treatments
  8. Appropriate client care
  9. Carry out a full reflexology treatment in the correct order and using appropriate techniques and adapting these techniques in order to treat a range of different client groups
  10. Evaluate the reflexology therapy treatment
  11. Provide appropriate after care and home care advice after treatment, advising of possible reactions
  12. Therapeutic benefits of reflexology
  13. The 10 zones that run the length of the body and the 4 zones that run across the body
  14. Describe how the feet are a microcosm of the body as part of the reading of the feet
  15. Importance of referral procedures
  16. Use suitable equipment and materials to suit the client’s needs and environment.
  17. Describe the structure of the feet, ankle, lower leg
  18. Implement good practice with regard to Health and
  19. Safety guidelines when conducting treatments
  20. Explain the role of reflexology for clients and families receiving palliative or social care.

Preferred Entry Level

This programme is suitable for learners who are 18 years or older who wish to study Reflexology at Level 5 ( FETAC / QQI) for their own personal interest in the subject or for academic / career enhancing e.g. wish to progress to the Professional Reflexology Diploma after they have completed the programme.

Learners would have previously achieved Level 4 FETAC / QQI certification or equivalent in a related subject or equivalent standard of education.

Student Requirements

This single module programme is a part time course. Typical learner effort over the whole course duration is 150 hours including 50 hours Programme Directed (lessons in class) and 100 Programme Self-directed study (individual learner study out of class).

All course notes are provided. Students required complete homework and tasks out of class. Students are required to have access to a computer with Word Processing software and printer for submission of assignments and homework.

Portfolio of Assessment

Assessment is by examination and 2 skills demonstration.

Examination (Theory)

Each candidate will complete a 2 hours theory examination paper, which counts towards 50% of the total mark

Skills Demonstration

Each candidate will complete two skills demonstration which they demonstrate Reflexology techniques which combined will count towards 50% of the total mark

Grading

Pass 50 - 64%,
Merit 65 - 79%,
Distinction 80 - 100%

€550 (includes course material text books and exam fees)

Course Dates

Next Course Starts 10th May 2016 for 10 weeks with the exam on the 11th week. Subject to a minimum of students enrolling.
