Level 6 (15 credit)

Purpose

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the concepts and principles underpinning nutrition, energy sources and energy usage within an active living, exercise, sports and or weight management context.

Preferred Entry Level

This programme is suitable for learners who are 18 years or older. Who have a Level 5 FETAC Certificate (Nutrition or Sports), Leaving Certificate (including Biology or Chemistry or Science) or ITEC Diet and Nutrition Diploma or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.

Who should complete this course?

People who wish to pursue a career and work in the fields of health, complementary therapy, nutrition and physical fitness. Or students who wish to study Sports Nutrition at Level 6 for personal study and / or as part of personal fitness program.

Progression

The module is an elective module for the Level 6 Sports, Recreation and Exercise 6M5147 award. It may also be included as progression to Higher Education or as a qualification in it's own right.

General Aims

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  1. Relate the principles of nutrition, digestion and the intake of food as a source of energy to the requirements of sports / active people.
  2. Understand the optimal food and fluid intake requirements before, during and after exercise.
  3. Design appropriate nutrition programmes for different sporting and weight management requirements.
  4. Investigate and research the importance of micro-nutrients, supplementation and ergogenic aids in relation to sports performance.
  5. Acquire a range of practical techniques relevant to sports nutrition.

Specific learning outcomes

The course is grouped into the following 4 units.

Unit 1
Energy Sources for Sport and Exercise
Unit 2
Nutrition and fluid intake before, during and after exercise
Unit 3
Weight Management for Sport and Exercise
Unit 4
Micro-nutrients, supplementation, ergogenic aids

Student Requirements

All course notes are provided. Students are required to complete homework and assignments out of class (5-10 hours per week). Students are required to have access to a computer with Word Processing software and printer for submission of assignments and project work.

Portfolio of Assessment

Assessment is by 1 Assignment, an Examination and a Project

Examination (Theory)

Each candidate will complete a theory examination paper, which counts towards 30% of the total mark

Assignments

Each candidate will complete one assignment which counts towards 20% of the total mark

Project

Each candidate will complete a Project which counts towards 50% of the total mark

Grading

Pass 50 - 64%,
Merit 65 - 79%,
Distinction 80 - 100%

Course Dates

Start Date: 11th May 2016

The course is Part Time 6 - 9:30 pm ( with tutorials to be arranged) for 10 weeks with exams on the 11th week and will run subject to a minimum of students enrolling. There is also the possibility of a class running during the daytime subject to student numbers.
